Dear Doug
North America is probably the only region of the world where apartments are commonly called condominiums. Not sure where the latter word came from, but subtle language variations of 'apartments' are common across Europe, the UK,Australasia and, in English translations, the modernising cities of Asia Former British Commonwealth countries also use a less prestigious word -- 'flats' as in blocks of flats.
