Two of the best current examples in the extreme are Elton John and Michael Jackson.
Or go back in history to Hampton Court Palace and Henry VIII.
If you are concerned with decoration, is it pre 1900's or after that time? Architects and designers were one before the 1900's employing fine artists to paint and do detailed work for their clients. After the 1900's, the professions seperated into the role of architect and interior designer.

There is plenty of research and documented study available according to which period you're after.
