I suspect that the steel beam combined with the remaining block wall will more than exceed any 1-2 hr rating you need to have, so don't worry about that, as long as the masons tie the CMU tight to the beam.
Take the advice from your structural engineer and use the CMU for stiffness and tie the beam to the wall.
