Hey n.m.a.w.i.i.d.- don't take that block for granted. 6" CMU are generally rated for 1 hr. If you take a 12" CMU and cut 6" out of it, you don't have a 6" CMU....not only because of the cores, but because there is no U.L. listing for this. Look in the U.L. book. Rated block has sp-ecific characteristics. Now you could cover that beam pocket with some other rated material and your problem would be solved.
