My opinion is that you can't ignore the environment. But it's up to you, always, how you are going to link. I think you have to analize every different location, situation e.t.c., wich means waching, noticing and most important measuring the importance of every volume, object or piece of the parc and decide how important(read dominant) your work should be and what kind of architecture it should be.
In my Faculty they used to recomend the book "Architecture in context", by Brent Brolin. I don't know maybe it could help
