Machiavellian it may be - and there is always the risk, or indeed likelihood, of history repeating itself.
but architects can make things better, even if it is only in a small way. It is the individual architect who does that, by deciding that a health care facility must be better, must be built for those who need to be looked after.
Scotland is in a remarkable position - its history, even when overshadowed by Britain, is remarkable, especially in engineering. It is a country in a contradictory position: it has great traditions, but these were largely connected with the heavier end of engineering (such as shipbuilding) and which, instead of bringing wealth and prestige, today bring poverty.
If it could use its skills - which must still be there - combined with the courage that the Scots have always shown, surely it could find a way to show its ability in today's world, and shouldn't Scottish architecture be part of that ?
my fear is that the "funny money" method of procuring buildings in england will obstruct that growth.
