I'm a draftsman / designer at an architectural firm and currently studying the feasibility of branching out into independent contracting status, doing less CAD and with more of a focus on 3D rendering. My concern is determining how strong of a market there is for this type of service, if any. There are people that approach our firm with this service and many more advertising online, but I can't tell how busy they are. Are there still architects that prefer to hire out this type of service or is it more desireable to be done in-house? How much of a concern is professional liability regarding "contracting out" work? How many still regard rendering as an unnecessary and 'non-billable' expense? Is there concern working via the internet rather than with the guy down the street? I would like to hear from architects on both sides of the fence on this issue. And for those riding the fence, I would like to discuss an arrangement of possiblity testing the waters together.
