I am a Building Surveyor University student in my third year doing my dissertation. I am thinking of doing it on the world trade centre and I found your article. Near the end of your statement you say:
"Had in place of the shear plate a true hinge (such as a door hinge) been designed the progressive failure would not happen"

Could you please go into more detail about this point as i do not quite understand your meaning.
