It is simply too soon to reconcile our loss by the planning and construction of new buildings. The rush to look forward to a resolve fosters more debate and more uncertainty in a time when we need to remember the dead and protect the living. The progression of time must put it into perspective. We aren't ready to know what we want.
The idea of the "Twin Towers of Light" is interesting. On one hand it could be an inspiring memorial to the dead, on the other it could prove a poignant and ghostly apparition of the destroyed landmarks. Perhaps it's too soon even for that.
Personally, I would prefer the eventual construction of buildings of a similiar shape and appearance. Their clean, simple, and soaring shapes, unlike many of today's retro-Gotham towers, were essential in creating their unassuming yet lofty majesty. New towers would pay tribute to the lost ones, rather than to deny their loss. There is simply no denying all of the loss. That's a given.
Maybe the new towers could be positioned in opposite corners to the originals, leaving those spaces open for memorial gardens, perhaps with those lights left in place.
But until enough time has passes, NO SOLUTION will sit just right. Nothing is going to sound good--it's just too soon.
