Yes,i remember reading a great book called"japanese homes and their
surroundings"by Edward Sylvester Morse(1838-1925)reprintedpub.[1972]
by C E Tuttle,rutland, vermont.372p.with numerous illustrations drawn
by Morse which show the simple grace and beauty inherent in the japan
ese ethos.there is an illustration of a bright,clean,colorful outhouse
where fresh flowers and paintings and ricepaper walls constrast with
our own nature hating,shameful,dark,dingy,toilets of that time which
because they were given so little thought,because of the squeamishness
of the prudish western mind,were often dirty and full of spiders and
other vermin,all because we chose to ignore a dirty secret,excreta..
