Message - Safely escaping fire in skyscrapers

Please share with me your knowledge on the briefly discussed deployable escape shoots which were used (and discontinued I think) to carry people from the upper floors of skyscrapers to safety in the case of fire. I believe the problem was friction ... (skin against the material X 100 floors = injury)?
