hey,
actually the problem of escaping fire from high HAS been solved. for example on the oil rig Hiberia in the north atlantic, they have chutes made out of fine cotton mesh in case of fire. as for the height, the top of the chute to sea level is close to 60 stories. and it has been tested safely! so no rug burns... if something like this were equipped to skyscraper design it might be possible to avoid death in a fire.
