Does anyone know about the possible integration of GPS technology on the Prius?
All Priuses have the dashboard buttons for the GPS system, which shares the LCD touch-screen display panel with the mileage graphs, power flow diagram, audio displays, etc. BUT for 2001, the first model year of the Prius in the US, the GPS system is not available.
The GPS system is however fully functional on the Prius in Japan, where GPS in autos is much more advanced than in the US. In Tokyo the GPS in your car can show not only the road map around your position, but also highlights the road sections where traffic is congested. The congestion information seems to be constantly updated, and it is also displayed on big fancy electronic highway signs, for people without GPS, but the GPS system shows more and you don't have to wait for the next sign to plan your strategy. (Crossing Tokyo by car often takes strategy!)
I believe Toyota has said the GPS system will be included in the USA Prius for the 2002 model year.
cheers,
