Looks like the current tax code doesn't support the $4,000 deduction you talk about. As far as I can tell, the IRS hasn't ever heard of the Hybrid Electric Vehicle and is really only supporting pure electrics like the EV-1. Take a look at:

BTW: I'd love to be proven wrong (I bought my Prius just after the new year of 2001).
