The GPS system is officially _not_ available for the first year of Prus in the US. It is already included in the Prius in Japan, where GPS mapping for drivers is generally more advanced than in the US. In Japan auto GPS systems are quite common in new cars. In and around Tokyo, traffic congestion is even displayed in real-time on big computerized maps over the highways.
The 2002 Prius is expected to include GPS in the US, built in by Toyota. I don't know how hard ($$) it would be to get it retrofitted to a 2001 Prius, but for now, you've just got some extra buttons there.
