When I was making my buying decision on a 2001 Prius, I spoke with a Toyota America representative who revealed that it would be essentially impossible to add GPS to the 2001 model, as the Prius uses proprietary interface protocols and the small volume of cars isn't going to encourage any manufacturers to go out of their way to attempt to interface with it.
Planned options for the 2002 model include GPS, in-dash CD changer, and cruise control.
