This April, UCLA Extension offers two (2) online courses for Landscape Architects –
ASLA members receive a $50 discount –

Landscape Architecture: Advanced Professional Practices (online)
April 7 to June 23, 2004
Fee: $490

This online course presents the responsibilities of managing design projects, both simple landscape architectural projects within a typical office setting, and the interface of landscape design elements within a multi disciplinary/team managed project. Instruction emphasizes the sequencing and prioritization of each phase and aspect of the design process; working with different types of clients and design offices; and cost-effectiveness and profitability, as well as legal and ethical responsibilities. Exercises include elements of project proposals (RFPs vs. RFQs), documentation methods, coordinating disciplines and project approvals.

Course objectives include:
·Preparation of proposal materials in response to various forms of
invitations to bid,
·Negotiation of contracts and fees,
·Project documentation,
·Development of complex Project Design Criteria, schedules and
approvals,
·Presentation styles, media and methods appropriate for the design
phase and ultimate work product,
·How to keep a project profitable (or minimize losses),
·Development of promotional material from project images and
material.

The course is appropriate for entry level design professionals with basic understanding of landscape architectural design, drawings and projects.

AutoCAD for Landscape Architects
April 8 to June 24, 2004
Fee: $510

This online course leads students through the basic steps of how to setup and draw landscape architectural type drawings using AutoCAD. Participants learn through a series of written lectures and assigned exercises how to create, modify, measure, dimension and print 2-D design elements. Knowledge and awareness of how AutoCAD operates in full scale, and how to create appropriate levels of detail based on ultimate plotting scale, are presented.

Information is provided through lectures, supported by lists of terms, and example images. Furthermore, instruction emphasizes achieving AuotCAD drawings that are accurate, readable, and graphically consistent with the desired output scales: large sites plans, small area plans, and construction details. Two projects and three quizzes reinforce information and assignments.

Course objectives include:
·Effective use of AutoCAD 2000 to create landscape design and
construction drawings
·Familiarity with software to draw and modify images using multiple
methods
·Plot images on Model Paper or Paper Space, at the desired scale
·Troubleshoot problems using program features, reference manual and
online help desk.

The end result of the course is an AutoCAD drawing that is accurate, readable and consistent with the typical look of landscape architectural drawings. This is an introductory course and requires some understanding of landscape architectural drawings but no previous experience with AutoCAD.

Participants must have their own copy of AutoCAD or sufficient access to software to complete all assignments. Student versions of AutoCAD may be purchased at www.paton.com.
