Posted by Kevin Matthews on August 31, 2000 at 21:40:02:Dear Friends of Architecture,
....and friends of Building, Home Design, and other Spatial Arts. We've been busy with a myriad of interesting projects at Artifice, including the launch of the new international magazine ArchitectureWeek, so this will be the first newsletter you've seen in quite a while. We've just tried to list some of our recent highlights below.
Best wishes,
Kevin Matthews
President

*** Create Perfect Kitchens with ByteSyze KitchenPAKIf you've seen ModelPAK and HobbyPAK from ByteSyze Studio, then you can already imagine the gorgeous cabinets, counters, and name-brand appliances and accessories included in KitchenPAK, the latest 3D model accessory library for DesignWorkshop from Bob Sprague and Co. If you haven't already seen it, it is worth a look for the inspiration alone - even if you'll never design a kitchen again. And if you _are_ designing a kitchen, then you'll want to have the concise custom User Guide (included) full of simple tips and tricks for counter and cabinet modeling.
http://www.ByteSyze.com/prod_flash/kpak/kpak.html KitchenPAK is available through Artifice or direct from ByteSyze.
(Coming next from ByteSyze this fall - BathPAK!)
*** 3D User Interface Patent Awarded to ArtificeIs all 3D software pretty much the same? Of course Artifice doesn't think so. Now the U.S. Patent Office agrees with us, and we have a certificate to prove it. United States Patent #6,057,827, "Automatic Pointer Positioning for 3D Computer Modeling," protects the Space-Jump(tm) function in current versions of DesignWorkshop, as well as the advanced SurfaceGravity(tm) features that will be built into future versions of DesignWorkshop.
Patent Information Link (Web links must be all in one line without page breaks, so if your email software breaks the line, you'll have to unbreak it to view the page.)
*** GreatBuildings.com Gets Picture IndexAdding new buildings, pictures, 3D models, and ocassionally new architects to the Great Buildings Online is an ongoing process. It adds up tremendously over time, but it's all in the details -- not much to announce about (though the new 3D model of Foster's HongKong Bank building is pretty cool). But for anyone who likes to just browse through good architecture pictures for inspiration, there's at least one major new feature at GreatBuildings.com :

*** CDEAT Survey Reveals 3D Design LeadersThere's a lot of 'conventional wisdom' about architectural CAD software -- like, 'everybody uses AutoCAD' -- but the real facts on the ground are hard to get to. The CDEAT 3D Design Survey, conducted for the California Energy Commission by DesignCommunity.com and Geopraxis, Inc., was designed to cut through the noise and establish a few key facts.
Would you be surprised to find that all Autodesk products combined make up less than half of the architectural software used in 3D design? Or that DesignWorkshop itself represents about 9%?

*** DesignWorkshop Updates for Mac OS 9The free update has been available since December -- but just in case you're a Mac user and you still haven't heard, here's a summary of where to download the free update for DesignWorkshop Lite, Classic, and Pro :
http://www.DesignCommunity.com/messages/3512.html
Updated versions of DesignWorkshop Lite, Classic, and Professional for Windows are also available at the listed locations.
*** New DesignWorkshop Machines for Contours, 3DMFThe new Contour Machine is free online for all DesignWorkshop users. Give it a set of contour polylines in a DesignWorkshop model, and you'll get back a fully triangulated 3D terrain model. This adds to and complements the capabilities of the Grid Terrain Machine.

For DesignWorkshop Professional owners, there's another new machine for converting 3DMF files back into DesignWorkshop standard format modeling files. This is useful for bringing in 3DMF objects from other applications, for getting back into model editing when a 3DMF version is all you have, and for other specialized techniques.http://www.artifice.com/confidential/edit_3dmf.html
*** R.I.B.A. and Artifice Get ConnectedThe prestigious Royal Institute of British Architects - counterpart of the A.I.A, and operator of the Architecture.com web site - has connected with Artifice in a forward-looking, multi-faceted web-based cooperation agreement. Direct searching of the R.I.B.A. library catalog has been integrated through GreatBuildings.com, where it is used daily by many hundreds of visitors. Meanwhile, Great Buildings is a main menu item on the R.I.B.A. home page, and ArchitectureWeek is a main item on the R.I.B.A. news page, where it sits alongside the New York Times, Times of London, Wall Street Journal, etc.
