Thanks for your response. Almost all of our renderings are done at 3072 pixels wide. So...the closer the image is to that the better. We do, however use smaller background images as well.
As for the type of backgrounds: Anything that looks like a house could go there. Good attributes would be: moutains in the distance, hills, bright sky, clear, some clouds, hint of a pond or creek or water, etc. Bad attributes include: Sunsets, in the mountains, buildings, monuments, ocean, known attraction, etc. The background is to support the illusion of realism, not to replace the focus of the image. The architecture, typically, needs to be the focus of the image.
We will typically take a background image, and places it into Arltantis. We may adjust the background image so that the 'horizon' lines up with the model's 'horizon'. It is rendered at the same time as the model. We usually add the grass and other landscaping items in a layered image, blending them to the architecture and background.
