I know what you mean about switching over to mac - from what I remember (the first computer experience I ever had was doing typesetting on a mac) the system was easy enough to deal with - but a lot of my software - especially the expensive Adobe stuff like Illustrator - is not dual platform.
As far as the computer company I deal with - my brother-in-law builds computers on the side. I tell him what I want to be able to do, he recommends what to get, I order all the pieces and he puts it all together. It has its ups nad downs - I save money but tech support from a family member isn't always the best.
