I have found that you can "split up" an element by "REAPPLYING" material dialog. Then carefully select away at the
portions that "should be" a different material. It should be easy with simple polygonal solids, but a bit more precision is required if you are working with a "mega-faceted" object (ala a warped plywood surface.
