I can confirm a couple of things.
- We do recommend that minimum and preferred memory settings be set the same -- on all your Macintosh apps, under normal conditions.
This approach results in more predictability in the _actual_ memory allocated to each app, and it also makes it less likely to cut the Finder down to zero, which makes it flakey.
- We also recommend using virtual memory, at the lowest convenient level. Turning on VR activates some more sophisticated memory routines, which will also make most software run more reliably. Older or improperly written software can have problems with virtual memory, however.
