3DS MAX is just O.K.
I am using Cinema4D besides and find it more user-friendly,has got some extra options that MAX does not(Radiosity, Area Shadows,(Volume)Caustics) and is twice as cheap!
Some colleagues are using Form.Z especially on a Mac platform.
For Better rendering results use Mental Ray,Lightscape...
