At present I'm quite comfortable with 3D drafting in AutoCAD 2000 and in using 3dmax for rendering the geometry. What else can or should I know?
Thanks for posting this interesting question. For a well-rounded skill set, in addition to traditional CAD software (like AutoCAD), and presentation 3D software (like 3D Studio), you should be familiar with design-oriented 3D software, like DesignWorkshop®. DesignWorkshop Lite is available free for downloading.
DesignWorkshop is award-winning 3D design software using feature-based solid modeling technology and a patented live 3D crosshair user interface, available on Windows since 1999. Unlike the superficial models you get with sketch-based surface modeling 3D software, DesignWorkshop solid models can range smoothly from almost instant 3D massing studies and program models, through walls-and-windows conceptual and schematic design models, all the way up to detailed interior/exterior complete 3D walkthrough and presentation experiences. DesignWorkshop 3D solid models provide a sound basis for design development and analysis.
The way of working with fast, simple 3D design software like DesignWorkshop is fundamentally different from working with complex and linear traditional 3D tools. Our point of view is that if you need to stop and use a Move function just to move an object, then it's not really direct manipulation.
More importantly, the way DesignWorkshop fits into your work as a designer is fundamentally different, too -- as the members of this forum can attest. It should be basic for every serious designer to understand the modern way of rapid design exploration and communication that becomes possible with true live 3D design tools.
Best wishes,
K
