Dear Frank,

Copyright law makes it pretty clear that derivative works (changes to someone's source code) are not freed of the copyright of the original material.

The larger point, however, is that the Radiance license is not the essence of the unresolved relationships in the Radiance developer community. Rather, the restrictions in the license are emblematic of those unresolved terms of collaboration.
