I would recommend obtaining demos of a few packages and trying them out. I’ve tried Architec PC, Allplan, Archicad and Revit.

I quite liked Architec, it is reasonably priced (in the US at least) and is ‘all in one’ ie includes rendering, animation and a digital terrain modeller. It seems fairly easy to use also. The downside is a quirky interface, a low user base, lack of local resellers and until the next release will only handle up to release 12 dxf/dwg files. Allplan is very powerful but expensive and (since buying it!) I’ve found it difficult to learn. It will probably do everything you could want however if you have the patience to learn it. Not everything is included though such as a DTM. Archicad is for many (not me) easy to learn but has lots of add ons so can work out very expensive. It is tried and tested though with a large user base. Revit is probably the easiest to learn and is quickly improving but still not as comprehensive as the rest. It is also subscription based, you rent it rather than buy it. Depending on your point of view this is an advantage in terms of a very low initial cost but potentially locks you in to greater long term cost. It does however include all upgrades and support.

I’ve only mentioned ‘parametric' 3d software similar to Architec that you mentioned. It really depends on your needs. If it is primarily 3d then you may be better with a dedicated 3d modeller. Two very easy to learn low cost alternatives are Design Workshop (of course) and my current favourite SketchUp (www.Sketch3d .com), both of which I would highly recommend. Again you can try out demos. You should draw up a list of what you need the software to do and then find out which one does it best.

Hope that’s of help.
