Dear J.J.,

All Macs from about the 8600 on include a hardware accellerator for QuickDraw 3D rendering. The hardware accellerator is what produces transparency in materials other than alpha textures.

For older Macs you can add a video card which supports QuickDraw 3D accelleration to get transparency.
