One final wrinkle, once you get that far :-)
The output of the Radiance program "rad" (which is what you are running when you type "rad myproject.rif") is a .pic file, a picture format that is Radiance-specific (or at least very rare).
Radiance comes with some very useful programs to convert that .pic file into more common formats. For instance, ra_bmp.exe converts to Windows .bmp files, and ra_tiff.exe converts to TIFFs.
