It sounds like the Radiance "rad" program is encountering the "colorpict" token in an unexpected place.
For instance, look in your dw.mat file. You are likely to find a number of statements that look like this:
void colorpict Carpet-Shag-Blue.map
Now, if the file became mildly corrupted, and that initial "void" word were missing, you'd get exactly the error message you are experiencing.
Look for something like this throughout your dw.mat. If you happen to see "colorpict" appearing at the *start* of a line, that can't be good.
There's also the possibility that the word that precedes "colorpict" is not being properly recognized (as in the line "ripples colorpict Lands-Water-Pool.map" if the ripples file is missing). But I would've expected such an error to result in other messages.
