Max is good if you are willing to put up with the interface.
And if you get every plugin known to man.. Of
the 3D packages I've looked at Lightwave has the best rendering.
Blender (little known) has the best navigation..
Maya has the best animation tools..
Max has best plugins..

Good luck in getting something complete that works..

PS- Pixar, Blue Skye, Dreamworks, Digital Domain write their
own software.. Because for about a couple of million you
its cheaper to write your own and you can add features to
the packages that don't exist on off-the-shelf packages,
eliminate the competition..
