I would advise you to take a look at the topic below on "Is Design Workshop a Dead Platform" before you consider investing time in it. 3D work, with the end result being acurate models and realistic, custom textures, will require some time investment. I would want to know where the company is heading with the product to see if it's worth the time investment. Look at the galleries, read the forums and try a few demos. For a low cost solution, I would suggest that you take a look at Maxon's Cinema 4D, a modeler. It's great for texturing and rendering and you can get a free Version 6 with this month's Computer Arts magazine available at Borders. It's complete with tutorials. You can make accurate models in any CAD program and bring them into Cinema as a dxf file for texturing, lighting and rendering. If you have a full version of AutoCAD you have all the modeling capability that you will need. A low cost CAD solution is IntelliCAD and the dxf models translate fine. Hope this helps.
