I just spent a whole day on this a week ago as I had the same problem. So I’m glad to share it with you.

supposing you have an imge of teh sign, you will need convert your image to a pict file first in the proportions you want it. then save it as a new material in the textures folder of design workshop. Then just draw a block and apply the new ‘material’ to it. this way you can put in your sign in any size or shape you want, it will be a block however. Good thing is you can make it transculent so that you may light it up. This link will explain in greater detail how you can do the above.

hope you have found this to be useful. I am trying to figure out how to draw curtains. Any ideas?
