Dear Designers, Builders, and Dwellers,

Residential Tuesday brings you top housing news and analysis
every week in this free email newsletter from the editors of
ArchitectureWeek.

Interesting perspectives on urban/suburban development patterns,
standards, values, and impacts come together this week with rising
questions about housing affordability and how to improve it.

In the current UK housing policy debate, Richard Rogers, along
with unveiling a new housing system, weighs in with an essay on
the sustainability side:

"The greatest danger is that the government might weaken its
policy of giving priority to development on derelict
brownfield sites. This sequential approach to land use is
crucial to strengthening the social and economic vitality of
the city and protecting the beauty of the countryside. ...

"Good urban design is about paying attention to the spaces
between buildings as well as the buildings themselves.
Well-designed streets, parks, squares and pavements are the
scene for the synthesis of urban life. If you make streets
attractive to passersby, then you enhance quality of life
and security: busy streets police themselves. Citizens
should be able to enjoy well-designed public spaces at all
scales, from small quiet gardens to squares, parks and
countryside easily accessible on foot or public transport. ...

"We must continue to choose a more sustainable urban form of
development, which minimises car use and maximises access to
local shops and services within walking or cycling distance
- and provide good public transport to enable travel over
longer distances."

ArchitectureWeek is a green publication. By publishing
this professional design and building magazine online-only,
we save about 48 tons of paper monthly, or about 50 big
trees-worth every week, compared to reaching a similar
readership on paper - not counting these newsletters!
We provide ongoing pro-bono services to local non-profit
sustainability organizations. And our company offices are
powered by 100% wind energy through our local utility.
