How do I get started? Have a floor plan and the land to put it on. The problem is at this point I want the exterior design to fit with the natural surroundings. Where should I go from here, an architect, draftsman, home designer, builder, general contractor, etc.?

Hi Missin44,

I think you need to find a designer or architect that you are compatible with. Where are you located?

I would recommend finding an Architect. I'm a full time drafting contractor, my skills are related to producing the construction documents using software, as quickly and efficiently as possible. A home designer is qualified to design how a structure should be built. A contractor knows how to run a job site and bring all the trades together in a logical manner. The Architect has the training to work with the client to consider how to best incorporate the desired structure within the chosen landscape.

You are about to start a project that will occupy you for months (if not years). It will probably be the biggest investment you ever make. Find someone you trust who has the knowledge to lead you through the process successfully (and I would not recommend hiring someone from the other side of the world). Look around for buildings you like and enquire who the architects and builders were. Talk with people who have worked with your candidates.

Many people treat architects and design quality as luxuries that can be quickly cut out of the process but a good set of architectural drawings will often save you more than they cost because they allow for competitive bidding among qualifies architects. Good design with pay benefits every day you live in your house and will pay you back a premium when you go to sell your property down the road. One of the best places to start is your local AIA directory which can be accessed through http://www.aia.org. Good luck and let us know how it goes!
