| I live in upstate NY in a Ranch style home. I'm looking to add a patio roof to the back of my house. The existing roof has a 5/12 pitch, Theres a 12" overhang and its just over 10' high. I would like to extend 16' out by 32' wide. I dont have enough height to carry the 5/12 pitch out to 16'. Theres a shingle roof on the house that I will be replacing with this new patio roof. What is the best way to tie into the existing roof. |

| Maybe a photo or a section drawing would help us give you some suggestions. What would be beneath the patio roof? |

Any idea when this house was originally built? If it's "period", it may have historic value and should be considered for preservation and restoration to some degree. If it's fairly new, and the neighborhood has a relatively varied "style", then I would say the "best" way to create this covered patio would be to build a gable that is perpendicular to the main roof. Or of you have a gable end, build an end patio with its own hip roof. Or you can build a low sloped roof below the existing ridge (begin @ +9') and slope 2 feet (to +7'), which particularly nice if it wraps around the corner of the house (big open ranch porch)...but the least "best" is the low sloped that ties into the existing eave, resulting in a double sloped roof (like reverse of gambrel roof)...this always looks like it was a roof that was forced and screams "addition". You want the new to look as if it was built as part of the original structure...anyway, good luck.
