| Does anyone know of any project where an indoor pool was constructed with a wood ceiling? I'm specifically looking for precedents that can give any information regarding species selection and/or any special chemical applications to mitigate oxidation. I have been unable to find any specific information through manufacturers that deal with this specific condition. Any help is appreciated. |

| Any wood ceiling will be OK as long as is coated with water repelant transparent coat, but if you are still wanting some wood that will not damage by humidity, use Redwood or Western Cedar, remember that wood breads so it expands and contracts, therefore it must be installed with room to move. |

It is probably too much of a sweeping statement to say any water repellent coating will do. Coatings such as varnish are liable to flake and peel eventually. I would expect there is some sort of oil or wax that would be best suited to a wet atmosphere. Hardwoods are used for exterior purposes and last for centuries, often without any treatment. But I know there are some hardwoods that do not take easily to surface treatment/preservative. I'm absolutely sure that your supplier will be able to advise you on how to treat it.
Wood will change colour (and shape) over time, if it is exposed to air/changes in atmosphere. Maybe you should consider an alternative method of construction if you don't like its natural qualities. |
