I am an engineer who needs to look for consulting work because of the present economy. At this time almost all of my contacts are in the engineering field. However in the past, I worked for a trade association and made cold calls on architects.
At that time however I was providing specification information free to the architects I called on. So I was almost always able to talk to someone at the firm. Now however I would be soliciting consulting work from firms. So I need to convince them to hire me instead of the engineers they have used in the past.
My question, is should I be aggresive and just show up at the architect's office and try to meet with the owner or one of the lead architects?
Or is it better to write the owner/lead architect, sending them a letter and resume; requesting a date for a short meeting? |

In the hope that my fellows will not turn on me (See "Tom Edison's Dog" by K. Vonnegut) - a few suggestions: Send a letter and follow-up with a telephone call about a week later ("... calling to verify that my letter reached you."). Don't expect the results you want on the first round, or the second. Timing is everything. So, simmer, then repeat. You are looking for the happy medium between pesthood and concerned inquiry. Once a year is not enough. Twice a month is too much. And, just as with any job interview, the more you know about me, the more targeted and relevant your pitch can be. |
