We are rebuilding a home with a great view of the bay. There is a balcony running in front of the living room, and it needs a railing. I'm trying to design a railing that minimizes the blockage of the view. The bottom 18 inches of the railing can be solid - the view is above it - but the upper part (code requires 34 inches in total height, so there is a 16 inch space to fill) needs to be as "non-blocking" as possible. I don't particularly like glass because of the reflections. I have been looking at wire railings (e.g., cablerail.com, or thecableconnection.com), but the standard versions have rather thick posts and top rails. Does anyone have a suggestion for a less obtrusive railing design? If I go the wire railing route, could I have posts made (stainless steel) that are only about 1/4 in thick, mounted edge-on to the view (and a similar thickness top rail)? I would also appreciate any suggestions for a source of design help for such railings. Thank you.
