Hi -

I am a young architect and am facing a tough career choice. I work for a large construction company and recently finished design work for a project that is now under construction. My company has asked me to move down to the project - a long way away from home - to be a field representative through the remainder of the project. However, another design job is starting soon, and I could be part of a small design team on it. I'm having a hard time deciding what to do because while the field job would put me on the site where I would get a lot of construction and 'real world' experience, I would have to move away from my wife for a year and miss out on this new design job. However, I don't work for the best designers in the world, and maybe I'd learn more valuable information by being on the construction site than working on this new design.

So my question is, if my career goal is to be a design architect, is it better to get another design job under my belt, or to get to be on site and actually see this new building go up, and learn more about how buildings are constructed? Anybody have any advice, or been in a similar situation?

Do it, as loyalty will mean everything to your company. Why do you want to do something that your company didn't ask you to do anyway? Remember, you are working for a "large construction company", not a design firm. Take the role they ask of you and you will benefit by it 100 times over, maybe make a little more $, and then return back with a better understanding of how architecture is constructed, which will make you a better designer in the future.

.....I would insist that your wife move with you and to start a new job in your new location....afterall, this is a stepping stone that neither of you can pass up in your young career.

Hi Arrow
I feel moving to construction site would help, as it seems that you have been much more into the pre realisation design exercise than the other. And It would also make it much more easier to start on your own later, as you would have accquired that experience!

Best of luck!
Take Care!
