If anyone can explain what the difference is, what program generates them, and what programs open these different file types, it will be greatly appreciated.
The files I am concerned about are:
.dxf
.dwg
.sat
.step
.iges

Thanks in advance,
J.D. George

DXF is digital exchange format, a format open-sourced I think) by AutoDesk to facilitate the exchange of CAD data between two different programs.

DWG is a native AutoCad file.

From what I can tell, IGES is a graphics file of bitmaps.

Don't know about SAT or STEP files.

Correction on iges John, it is a "standard" (or neutral) CAD (2D or 3D) file format. Most if not all of your "big dog" 3d apps can use this format. Here is a link.

Sat and Step are similar 3D, usually mechanical applications, file formats. I know that Rhino3D and Studio Max can both open iges.

Cheers Smile

Hai Guys! SAT is the Standard ACIS Text format for exchanging information with the ACIS geometry definitions. ACIS is the 3D modeling software from Spatial, a division of Dassault Systemes of France. Any ACIS-based CAD program will open the file. I am also waiting to know about the step extension. The only step I know is the Siemens Step7 PLC software. But the file extension of it is .s7p, .s7s and .mwp for the micro PLC's.

STEP is an emerging format which is intended to include a large amount of machining information, including the model, material and tool information. Mastercam will read the CAD data from STEP files. STEP files have the .STP or .STEP extension.

Benefits: These files can potentially carry a wide variety of information that is not available in other formats.

Considerations: Although this format will become more widespread, it is not currently used as widely as other formats, such as IGES. In addition, most packages that currently output STEP files do not output all of associated information that STEP is intended to support.
