As a freshman arch student I thought my 3 years of high school drafting and all the related courses would prepare me properly for college but this is not the case.
First thing we worked on was model making which I was not prepared and the instructor assumed that all students had some model making in their background. I find this fun but very time-consuming and on my very first project I was marked down for uneven glue although my concepts were sound. Is this customary for freshmen be expected to have a background in model making or is it a way to get rid of the students who don't have the real motives and or desire. Oh well, got to get to my next project,
thanks for any insight |

Hey,i think you needn't to worry.Since you are new,it's normal. As the time passes by,you will be more experienced.Believe me,i was in a worse situation than you.I have totally no drawing, making neat model skills etc.But by doing regularly, and of course with some good help, now i feel much more confident.(I am at 3rd grade now)Go and talk to your instructors, ask for help. They will like to help you. |

It is not normal. Where are you going to school?
Unless things have change a whole lot in 25 years, there shouldn't be any model building in first year.
For what it's worth, there's a lot more to architectural education than drafting and it is highly likely that most of what you learned in high school will be of little use beyond having some basic drafting experience and cad knowledge. |

Jr College with oversight by University of Florida and a UF Graduate student teaching the course. Things must have changed because students are building models in 3rd semester also.
Always wanted to be in the field but finding out how low the salery is makes me want to change. Architure is now a master program with an intership so the schooling is almost equal to a doctor or attorney with pay like a garbage man.
I assume they are intentionally making things difficult because of the limited number of slots available at UF.
Thanks for your input |

model building, at my school anyways, is done from the time you enter to to the time you leave. model building is important presentation that can be used to convery ideas and spacial qualities to clients.
does your school have laser cutters and cnc mills? these tools can be used to your advantage and greatly help with your models.
for practice, try building a model without the use of any adhesives. _________________ Jon Bailey
