As many are noticing, there are some postings, made between sometime June 25 and sometime on July 2, for which the body text is here in the forums but dissociated from the header information including author, topic, and forum.

The effect is bizarre: Some new topics made during that period have lost the association to their postings, and some of the postings without headers are scattered across other topics.

I hope you can bear with this by taking comments even less personally that usual, and by overlooking random insertions to pickup ongoing conversations as best you can, where you find them.

In particular, don't assume that the listed author is correct for posts that went up during that orphan period.

This should not be an ongoing problem. It is a one-time side effect of restoring part of the forum database from backup files after a serious system error on the morning of July 2, 2009.

Some details for those who are interested...

This forum system is complex enough that there's one table in the relational database for the summary information about all the postings, and separate tables for all the posting contents, for the topics, etc.

Yesterday morning the database table with the summary information about all the postings was gone, and had to be restored from a backup version about 100 postings or so (20-25 topics maybe) earlier.

That restoration left the 100 or so later postings, still present in the content table, floating around at loose ends, and they seem to be popping up in strange places, solid content but with scrambled authors, topics, and forum placements. Working on a way to unwind that chunk of craziness.

Anyway... Thanks for rolling along with these complications as best we can, with good humor, a light touch, and a positive, forward outlook!

Patching together, yes... and please do send us email at "support@artifice.com" with specific URLs and other necessary details, if you see specific stray postings to pull out of the wrong topics, or to claim or disclaim authorship of specific postings. Thanks!

If the host has trouble in the kitchen, the least the guests can do is maintain a pleasant disposition -- and be grateful that they aren't asked to man a mop and pail !

Thanks for all your trouble, Kevin.
