This Piano project seems to me to epitomize the kind of metaphorical dovetailing mentioned in the article:

CLick on the Google Images tab for a few pics. Click on the Panoramio Images tab to see where it is located, completing the urban corner kitty-corner to the Centre Pompidou. I'll look through our Paris images to see if there's something I can add.
ANyway, the IRCAM massing seems to add so beautifully to the pre-existing urban ensemble that there'd be a missing-tooth feeling if it were removed. And it picks up and expresses structural rhythm in its facade from the adjoining historic masonry, while also being authentic to the wholly-modern way it is built. The material palette connects without copying using one of the first applications I'm familiar with of terra-cotta facade panels (which Piano helped make trendy later at the Rue de Meaux housing...

An excellent urban building in itself, which performs an almost miraculous degree of elegant mediation between the historic Parisian urban wall, and the corner-to-corner facing Pompidou. Really something. |

Metaphors eh? I checked out the pics. High-tech modern dovetailing. I guess finger joined doesn't sound as flamboyant. Is this the secret of what I've heard called archi-speak?
Refined talent in biscuit and glueing elegant new architecture with an existing context.
Oh, scarfs are cool.
Refined talent in scarfing elegant new architecture with an existing context. Scarf sounds harsh perhaps to a novice, but the old pros would dig it.
Pegging!!!
Refined talent in pegging elegant new architecture with an existing context. I love it and gave myself a chuckle again. _________________ An event is to chaos as function is to form. n/a

Yeah, I am having trouble applauding someone for designing an appropriate addition. Shouldn't this be considered standard practice? _________________ -Chris Stewart
