I don't know about other folks, but my computer tends to get cranky and do weird things when I run the Classic Environment. I've taken to firing up OS9 only when I need it and then quiting it as soon as possible.

The above was a preface to saying that although DW v1.8 may work well in Classic, Classic doesn't work that well in OSX.

If you're not ready to release Version 2, how about a version of the current program that will run native in OSX? I don't have any other reason to run OS9 anymore, and I'm afraid that I find myself avoiding the use of DW to avoid having to use OS9.

We've found DesignWorkshop running in the Classic Environment works very well, even for daily model production.

So, while we're all waiting for an OS X native version of DesignWorkshop, it seems like a good idea to cover a few simple things you can do to get the most out of the current DW, running in the Mac OS X Classic Environment.

First, be sure you're using the 1.8.6 version of the DesignWorkshop edition you own (eg, Lite, Classic or Professional). DW 1.8.6 works well with Mac OS 9.1 and newer (including the OS X Classic Environment) and provides significantly improved opening speeds for larger .dw model files.

DesignWorkshop Lite users who need the update should contact Artifice Support. The updates for DW Classic and DW Professional are available for free to registered users through the Confidential Owners Areas of the Artifice web site.

Second, make sure you're using the latest versions of the Mac OS: both Mac OS 9 and Mac OS X. Having the current version of Mac OS 9.x can really impact how the Classic Environment operates.

And while the Classic Environment works well in both Mac OS 10.2 and 10.3, I have noticed that 10.3 tends to be a bit more reliable. All other things being equal, we currently recommend using DesignWorkshop in the Mac OS X 10.3.x Classic Environment (running Mac OS 9.2.2).

Third, it's a good idea to have the latest compatible versions of QuickTime and QuickDraw 3D installed with the Mac OS 9. Both are included with the current QuickTime Installer for Mac OS 9, which is available free from Apple.

Also, if you do run into an issue using DesignWorkshop in the Classic Environment, the Classic Environment may not correctly supply all the information you would normally get from the Mac OS, running directly in 9.x. If your Macintosh supports booting into 9.x directly, doing so for troubleshooting purposes may lead to additional insight into the issue.

And Artifice Support is always glad to help with any questions or problems. Just use the fast and convenient Tech Support Request Form or send an email to us at: support@artifice.com.
