This is a weird one. started right after someone rebooted our file server while User 1 had some drawings open. This affects not just the drawings that were open, but others on the server as well. I'm going to simplify a bit since it's sort of complicated:

User 1 is running OSX 10.4 and PC 7.05
User 2 is running OSX 10.5.2 and PC 7.06

Other users are on 10.4 and seem to have the same issues as user 2.

User 1 now sees powercadd files as unix executable files. If User 1 opens a file (by "open with") and saves it to the file server, User 1 now sees the file as a PowerCadd file. However, User 2's computer sees it as a plain text file that can be opened From PC or "open with". If user 2 saves the file, it goes back to showing up as a PC file for both users...until User 1 opens and saves it again.

If user 1 has the file open and has saved it at some point, and user 2 wants to open a copy for reference, User 2 can't open or even copy the file to his desktop (error -50)...the file is completely inaccessible.

Something is strange with how user 1's computer sees and saves powercadd files. it appears to be limited to powercadd files.

Help?

repair permissions, reboot

if that doesn't work use the filetype and creator restore from engsw at http://engsw.com/downloads/utilities/

I tried the Creator & Type Restore utility several times. It did not work.

Here's a description of the behavior.

1. PowerCADD is not running;

2. I double-click any PowerCADD file, even brand new ones, and this should launch PowerCADD and open the file

3. The program does not launch, and I get an OS error:
"The operation could not be completed.
An unexpected error occurred (error code -10660)"

However, if PowerCADD is already open, then double-clicking on files works normally, i.e., it launches PowerCADD and opens the file.

Yeah, that's a work-around: Just keep PowerCADD open. But that does not conform to Mac OS user interface guidelines.

Seem like sloppy or errant programming that should be fixed.

While it's true that errant programming should be fixed -- so should errant user/administrator behavior. Restarting a server without warning connected users would seem to fall into that category. Point being it's a bit premature to be pointing figures just yet based on the limited information provided.

Have you tried something as simple as removing the PowerCADD com.engsw.PowerCADD7.plist file and letting it make a new one. It could be that preference settings file got kicked in the head when the server was shut down. That's a very standard thing to try when trouble shooting problems with any application.

If a new *.plist file doesn't correct the problem, what is the server setup and configuration? Does everyone still have the same problem, or is it just one user? There might still be a permission problem on the server.

Permissions repaired;

plist replaced (SOP when installing, especially with Power CADD);

Get Info window opened, reassigned to open with newest version of PowerCADD and clicked Change All... button

My set-up:

Mac Pro 2x2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon

OS X version 10.4.11

So the problem happens only with your computer/copy of powercadd when connecting to the server?

what is the server and network setup?

do others on the network have the same problem?

does the problem persist when opening files that are on your local hard drive as opposed to being on the server?

does the problem persist if you create a new user ID in OS X and try again from that user ID on your computer?

I'm not the OP. I think we've got two different conversations going on here. I'm not using a server. No network involved.

I posted to this thread because this appears to be a file type / file association problem.

I should probably start a new thread.
