how far along in their career are they?
starting you are looking at about 30-35k a year...
being the principal at a large national firm say like, gensler, you would be making 7 figures easily |

Well I am not making that much and I have been working at different
architectural offices since 1989. Maybe it is different in America. Now I feel
"well paid" but I am still not making that much. Thank God I found a good
investment program (Pips Inc Forum is the place to be). Besides I am also
interested in the other cleative fields. |

Me? In Europe. I am working directly under the boss as an architect, there
are just a few of us at the office. I do anything from taking drawings to
the digital form from measuring buildings, interior design details, compe-
titions, I use 2 different programs for town planning layouts and coloring,
designing extensions and renovations. |

Actually I am not working a full week, only 140 hrs a month. Probably it
would go up to 30k if I was working 160-180 hrs a montn but I also have
a other responsibilities and interests (for which I really have time over the
weekends). |

As a general rule of thumb about earning and work patterns of architects that have held true over the years, here's my list for you to consider:
* Earnings are generally higher in private practice than in public employment.
* There is a paid internship - that is, the graduate makes a living wage immediately upon entering practice.
* Earnings fall into the median of all professionals, i.e., below doctors and dentists and about the same as lawyers and accountants.
* Incomes over $100,000 are becoming more and more common, especially in large firms.
*Construction is a cyclical industry, and incomes can vary according to local building activity.
* Deadlines are commonplace and often require overtime and evening work, which could affect your bottom line salary.
To summarize, salary levels deepend on several factors - population densities, geography, local economies, and working patterns. Salaries for professionals will generally be higher in urban areas than rural, but living expenses will be higher, and a steadily rising standard of living and an uncertain economy will also complicate the income picture.
Obviously, your income is only one employment consideration, as fringe benefits, cost of living, position, and job satisfaction must also be weighed to determine the attractiveness of a particular position. |
