Ive got cranberry furniture, a black fireplace and beige carpeting in my place and I want to paint my walls because they dont match, but im kind of clueless . . any suggestions on some good, modernizing, colors??

im desparate!!

Try a color complimentary to the cranberry. The color wheels says that it is the yellow/green family. You don't want a true green. You want a green with alot of grey tones in it. For example find a sage green on a color chart and go to the more gray tones of the sages. The green will complement your couch, while the cool grays modernize the look and will contrast your fireplace.
