I've read an essay on Scientifc American Brasil (a brazilian version of the american one) and it put in discussion the possible use of sensors inside houses or flats which would certainly help and change drastically our way of living. Imagine if all kinds of sensors, with especific functions determined by nanochips, spread all over your house that could make possible to actvate any machine by the sound of your voice. Even inside the cities, a system developed to coordinate the traffic lights according to the way of living of the people. think of what could be made with carbone nanotubes, which are 20 times more resistent than any steel; think of the structures we could do with nanorobots, a perfect structure made molecule by molecule. of course this last topic is to be (if it will someday be) thought and realized in a fairly distant future, when nanotecnology will be dominated and the processes will be cheaper. But the aspects I went through in the begining can be done by now with the technology we've already got. speculations..speculations..

It's certainly a beautiful idea drc_brasil. But the reality of it? i'm thinking of the reliability of voice activated dialling in cars etc.. and then thinking.. if i asked my washing machine to wash my collection of artificial leopard and zebra print Y-fronts at 30 degrees on the cool wash, the chances of it putting them on at a 90 degree whites only wash would be far too high. I just wouldn't risk it. And furthermore how would they get into the washing machine in the first place? and the powder! and obviously the conditioner too!
I don't think it'll change the way we live inside our homes much further than lighting and security and advancing appliance technology.
It's pretty funky technology but i think it's the same as those tomorrow's world programmes back in the 60s saying we'd all be shooting around on floating cars and wearing tin foil suits. imagine that! think i'll stick to the leopard print.

I reckon that you've, lewiseca, got a point. There is a lot to think and change, but I'm talking about something for the future, what I wrote was merely a rough idea. Don't get me wrong, but I sometimes like to think higher, and I'm quite aware that today we must think in projecting places confortable for living, that are not so expensive to built and also have an interesting plasticity in the form. We have to improve our way of life making use of we got right now, if it's not possible, then we think about new forms, materials and ways. Sometimes it's good to philosophize and especulate about our future. thanks for your comments, they were quite helpful to my article!
keep in touch, and keep your eyes on your leopard prints!

The leopard prints will be safe just as long as my washing machine stays old fashioned!
You're quite right though, we have to embrace new technology and ideas to progress, even if only the smallest percentage are viable then we're still going forward.
good luck!
