They tore down an old gravel depot (?) by the bay in Richmond, a while back. Wish I had got a picture. It seemed to be just a massive frame of 20" timbers. . .

I saw it driving around Cody, Wy. For obvious reasons, as described by a picture, I found it interesting.

The rational behind it, I find intreging. "What was the architect thinking"

So, where do you put the gutters?

That was [ahem] Mr Wright's dilemma, too. He often ignored the requirement, probably by dismissing them (when asked) as unnecessary (along with foundations below the frost line, parapet flashing, insect screens, etc). Better to put the money into the "architecture." Oh, but what architecture !

Like a 70's FIAT: great driver's cars, but let somebody else build them.

Reminds me of early Koolhaas, when I'm sure he said something like "we don't do details" or even "we don't know how to do details". Which is another way of saying "We're so confident in our other skills that we can proudly boast the ones we lack" which is a variation on Issac Newton's "on the beach, staring out at a sea of knowledge" idea and, of course, in the Wrightian sense rhetorical: "look guys, this is the important stuff! let someone else pick up the groceries!!" - which, even if that does imply the importance of teamwork, is not a sentiment that, as a west coast Scot, I could agree with

Of course. It's a sure pity that such a gifted designer should have no shame in betraying the job of architect, in favor of the Art. How can anyone wonder that he was shunned by the profession, by and large ?

I argue with other Wrightians about the propriety of recreating his work, where it has been lost or remains unbuilt (as a start). Architects by and large seem to stand by the idea that each building has only one place in the world -- as if their jobs, or their honor, rested on such a stance. Maybe it does -- but I prefer the model of the appliance. Do we build only one chair, one car, one boat of each design ? Assuming an appropriate site, can we not build again -- and again -- without denigrating the Idea ?

Wouldn't it be a pleasure, and an honor, to build any of his work, well -- just to see it, again ? Why not ? Learn, enjoy, then move on. . .
