I may be running against the poll, but to perceive architecture as a hobby is a gross error and miscalculation-- the dedication, training, education, time and devotion involved far outstrips the hobby [even the obcessive hobby].
The poll is really NOT asking evaluation of equals-- they are no way close.
Hobbies can be and often are serious, but there is still a "lightness" about them, a sporadic timing, and a lack of liability to others. A profession is not like that.
Let me ask-- is your doctor practicing a profession, or a hobby?
[Personally, I do not prefer a hobbist/surgeon!!!] |

| But do you believe that only architecture as profession will pay you the way you want in initial five years of free lancing, if not then does it not reflect upon frustation in some manner? |

Also a doctor actually selects his interest in a specific field to be his profession so that he can practice it the best,
BUT for an architect it his profession that demands interest in thing he does to give it final shape.
Above all Medical science is necessity for every suffere/patient BUT architecture is another name to luxury. |

does it depend on what architecture is? Is it design of buildings (which might be a hobby), or is it design and location of buildings, in which case, how do you defend your vocation if someone describes it as urban planning (which is a pretty dull hobby!)? Or is it a form of engineering? Or is it an art form, a type of poetry or literature in itself? Do you have any opinions on this one?
I think these cool ideas like habitable bridges and architecture of movement, and architecture for the poor and so on, they say a lot about the different facets of architecture and about the fact that there are many opportunities to provide different backgrounds and expertise for it to make it... well... change the world or the local environment at least. In that sense, perhaps an argument can be made for it being "best practiced" as a hobby, though people who are architects professionally also do these things... so maybe that's an irrelevant point. |

i think the study of architecture can be a hobby...
but actually creating architecture pretty much demands that it be approached in a manner indicative of a profession... when the health safety and welfare of the public may very well be at risk, then it being a hobby isn't such a good idea...
i think there is far too many practical parameters involved in designing and building a building to simply say it is a hobby |

everything you all said is definitely right, but this all world of perfect professionalism is completely true for an architect when he does't demand anything for his services. anybody apart from an architect believes that he can save very much on his pocket and can go with a planned economy by using and appoarching an architect without paying him for it.
in my opinion thats why it is better as a hobby, because hobby need not be paid but a profession has to be. |

| aye, but at the same time, architecture's a (professional) vocation, so it doesn't need paid. It has the nature of a hobby because of the passion (am I being naive?) that's put into it, but yeh, needs the responsibility that comes with the name "profession", though hopefully not the money grabbing aspect of it! |

weather a hobby or profession..................Architecture will come out only if one has the passion to carry it on to the top of everything. _________________ ......and miles to go before I sleep....... |

it seems rather unfair to categorize architecture as a profession or a hobby. it's neither of the both. architecture is spiritual and its like a prayer, an offering...rather than just a profession or a hobby..i believe its deeper than dat.it seems almost spiritual to me.
I dont know how many of you guys are able to relate to what i am saying... |
